.270 Win

John 14:6 "I am the truth" "I am the way" "No one can come to the father but by me"
John10:9 "I am the door; by me if any man enter in he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and shall find pasture"
John 11:26 "He that believes on me shall never die"

If I were looking for a .270 today, would I buy the .270 Win or the newer .270 WSM? I might buy the .270 WSM. The .270 WSM is on average about 200 fps faster with any given bullet weight than the standard .270 Win. At the muzzle, the .270 Win clocks about 3050fps and the .270 WSM around 3275fps. At 400 yards the trajectory is only around 3 inches different. I have never shot an animal at 400 yards with anything. I live on the east coast, specifically the N/E and it just never came up. I know that 400 yard shots have been made on medium size game with the old .270 Win for many years. The .270 WSM shoots a little faster (around 200fps) and a little flatter (around 3 inches or so at 400 yards), but the big difference is in the energy level of around 400 ft pounds at 400 yards.

Since I already own a .270 Win, I have no plans to trade it in for a .270 WSM. If I did not own either, I would take a hard look at the .270 WSM. Since I also do not handload anymore, I would have to look at ammo availablility and pricing for factory loads, and here the .270 Win wins hands down. If I were a handloader and were in the market, I would handle the rifles for both and make a decision based on my needs. For more information and articles, visit my website.
