One of the NEWER scent applicators in this category is made by "Heat Wave Scents" and following is a link with a YouTube video explaining how the scents work. One thing to like about the newer scents such as this one is that they do not require batteries as a heat source and there is no flame needed. Years ago I purchased a little lantern set up with different scent candles. It did disperse the scent okay however I was not comfortable in the woods with dry leaves etc. with a portable heat source requiring flame.

WARMER:
The warmers are non-toxic and are non-combustible and can be re-activated and re-used. Heaters do not require a power supply of any kind.
HOW TO ACTIVATE THE HEATER:
Activate the warmer by snapping the metal disc within the heater.
Apply scent to the felt pad on the Heated Scent wick (not included).
Hang the wick on a branch and start your hunt.
The warmer now heats the wick which generates a strong aroma that is used in attracting game.
DIRECTIONS for Re-ACTIVATING the ORIGINAL Scent WICK:
Note: Due to the strong aroma of different scents it is recommended that these operations be performed in a well ventilated area or outdoors.
Wash the old scent off with mild soap and water.
Boil water in a pan. Do not place heater in the microwave.
Place the Heatwave Scent Heater and Wick into the pan of boiling water until the contents inside the bag becomes a clear liquid (approximately 6-10 minutes)
Let cool and allow wick to dry and you are on your way.
I also used deer sense smoking sticks. I tried them for a couple of seasons and had very little luck with this type of lure. They certainly will carry the scent through the woods or field on a gentle breeze and I can't fault that. It is just that personally I never had much luck with them. Perhaps the product has improved since my earlier experience. They still have a website and scents for deer, bear, moose, predators, hogs, elk, mule deer, caribou, turkey etc. See LINK below:

Lastly, here is another one that peaked my curiosity. It is called the Hot Pod Scent Warmer and uses hand warmer to heat the scent. It appears to be quite compact, light weight, effective and again NO flame or batteries needed. This product is put out by CODE BLUE.
This one has caught my eye and is reasonably priced currently at $11.98 per item, fits into a pocket and you could hang one on a deer trail and the other on a branch in front of your deer stand etc. From experience and study, I know a bib bucks greatest asset is his NOSE and sense of smell. I grew up hearing that sometimes a big buck can see you, he can hear you and you might still get a shot. If he smells you, you will probably see his white tail flag waving goodbye to you. Scents never guarantee a successful hunt, however anything you can do to fool a buck's nose put the odds in your favor. It is up to you to stay quiet, and to not fidget a move around on your stand and to make sure you are as SCENT FREE as possible. Their scents line is also available for deer, bear, coyote, elk and moose and hogs.
In closing I just have to say, "I LOVE DEER HUNTING AND BEAR HUNTING", and enjoy trying different products and seeing what works. It is all part of the enjoyment of the sport.
