Shotgun Triggers

It is nice to see that decent triggers have finally caught up with the shotgun industry. I haven't paid a lot of attention to that situation although for years I have been very critical of rifle triggers. I either sent my rifles off to a reliable gunsmith to work on them or replace them with an after market Timney trigger etc. That last few years with the Wild West Happy Trigger kit to replace triggers on Marlin Lever Actions, the Savage Accu-trigger, and other manufacturers turning out bolt actions with adjustable triggers has made shooting rifles accurately easier.

My old stand by Ithaca Storm 12 Ga. rifled bbl shotgun for whitetails had the original trigger worked on by the Ithaca Factory in King Ferry, NY just before they closed their doors.

I haven't bought a shotgun since and was not aware that now one can buy an off the shelf shotgun with a decent trigger. Apparently as of the 2010 SHOT show Mossberg now offers the LPA trigger on certain models of their model 500 pump gun. They somewhat resemble the Savage Accu-trigger and they are adjustable. The LPA stands for "Lighting Pump Action" adjustable trigger system. It is reputed to be crisp, creep full and adjustable to a little less than 3 pounds.. Remarkable considering the pricing on these guns.

I have had gunsmith's install Timney replacement triggers in several guns over the last 30 years. The 2010 SHOT show also revealed that Timney now offers an "870 Trigger Fix" fir the Remington model 870 pump shotguns. Installation procedures are apparently on the Timney website. Back in 2010, there were 10,245,594 Model 870's out there that are eligible for the Timney trigger fix. Remington certainly hit the jackpot when they invented the model 870 Pump.

If you are in the market for a dedicated whitetail gun in either Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 persuasion, there are guns available now with adjustable triggers. The model 870 would benefit greatly from the Timney trigger kit and the Mossberg's can be had off the shelf in certain models.
